Reports & Consulting

TBC is offering four reports in 2019:

Our 2019 xEV Industry Insider Report is available. This report features in-depth reviews of the Chinese xEV industry and market and future HEV-PHEV-EV battery technology and cost. This comprehensive study is based on Dr. Anderman’s onsite interviews with senior battery technologists and business development executives at 15 global automakers and their leading battery suppliers.

In addition, the following three reports, all written by experts who share our commitment to unbiased excellence, are available.

Battery Packs of Modern xEVs, a report authored by Kevin Konecky and Dr. Menahem Anderman, provides an analysis of the battery-pack technologies—including cell, module, and subsystem—used in over 100 of the most recent xEVs. April 2019 edition available.

Li-Ion Batteries and Beyond, a unique report authored by Prof. Martin Winter,  evaluates advanced-battery R&D work across the globe and highlights the most promising materials and cell technologies destined to enable advances in battery technology and, with them, market expansion. Published February 2017.

Li-Ion Battery Safety and Abuse Tolerance, authored by Dr. Daniel Doughty, presents the fundamentals of battery safety and abuse tolerance. It discusses materials, cells, and battery system design, manufacturing, applications, and validation, as well as the lessons learned from recent failures. December 2017 edition available.

Supporting Dr. Anderman at TBC as consultants are:

Kevin Konecky is a TBC consulting associate with over 20 years of experience in automotive energy-storage system engineering.

Dr. Daniel Doughty provides independent expert consulting services addressing a wide range of battery safety issues, including failure analysis, test method development, interpretation of test results. He has also served as expert witness, and offered forensic consulting.

Prof. Martin Winter is the director Muenster Electrochemical Energy Technology (MEET)—the largest battery R&D institute in Europe—and an active consultant for industry and governments.

Since 1996, Total Battery Consulting (TBC) has been providing consultation and multi-client industry reports since 1996 in the field of energy-storage development, application, and market, with particular emphasis on the advanced automotive battery market. TBC’s 300+ clients range from some of the world’s largest automotive materials and battery producers to fast-moving, innovative Silicon-Valley startups and also include financial institutions and government agencies. Dr. Menahem Anderman, founder and president of TBC, provides expert, independent consulting services for a wide range of battery issues including power source technology assessment and product development, application, and usage. In 2000, Dr. Anderman also founded the premier international event in the industry: the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference (AABC), which he has chaired ever since.

Total Battery Consulting’s aim is to make available to industry professionals around the world information that can help them focus their financial and human resources on the most technologically viable and economically affordable options to meet the needs of the automotive energy-storage industry.

“Dr. Anderman and TBC are a very valuable, independent source for automotive battery technology and market insights.”

Soeren Striepe, Senior Manager, Magna International

“PolyPlus Battery Company has used Dr. Anderman's services over the past several years and we have always found Menahem to be efficient and competent in his approach to technical problems, and highly informed on new developments in the battery community. I recommend his services without reservation.”

Steve Visco, CEO, CTO and Founder, Polyplus Battery Company, Inc.

“There is certain data that you just cannot get elsewhere and we rely on the Report’s analysis - especially cost information; it’s almost impossible to compare yourself with competitors by any other means. The market is getting bigger fast, so it is very valuable to us. It is worth the money - absolutely. No question.”

William Wallace, Director, Global Battery Systems, General Motors

“The xEV report is very valuable because it has such good technical related content; it helps us not only understand the commercial side of the market, but also the technical side of the market. It is definitely a good investment and good value.”

Ina Jiang, Sales Engineer, Rogers Corporation

“The xEV Report is relevant, it is not wading through, pages and pages of information to find what we are looking for. The information is exactly what we are looking for.”

Ted Miller, Senior Manager of Energy Storage Strategy and Research, Ford Motor Company

Industry on the Move

The battery industry is entering a period of unprecedented expansion. Increased pressure from governments to reduce CO2 and pollutant emissions, coupled with significant improvements in the performance-to-cost ratio of automotive batteries, is accelerating the rate of hybrid and electric vehicle development across the globe. Just as important, automakers now have a much more optimistic view of the marketability of battery-powered EVs and are expanding their electrified-vehicle development efforts while at the same time pulling in and increasing the volumes of production plans.

This new situation has created significant opportunities for the xEV supply chain, but with those come notable risks. The carmakers’ and consumers expectations for lower pricing, longer driving range, and fast-charge capability are all very demanding and, of course, durability and safety cannot be sacrificed. We, at TBC, understand automotive battery requirements, including batteries with lower cost, higher energy density, wide operating temperature range, high power and the ability to accept fast charge, and, of course, safety and durability. The opportunity is huge but so are the challenges—our reports will help you follow the trends, the issues, and the directions adopted by key players.
